Technical Overall Rating (based on average of above ratings): 9/10

*This rating is unbiased and based completely on the honest ratings for each category and so may often be lower than my personal rating. This is the rating you’d probably like to go by when deciding if you’ll watch a series or not, unless my explanation for my personal rating of why it deserved a better rating is one you agree with

Personal Overall Rating (based solely on my personal enjoyment): 11/10

*This rating is totally biased and based completely on my personal feelings of the anime. This will often be higher than the technical rating because sometimes I love certain series despite them being kind of bad. My reasons for the higher rating will often be given here or in the GC.

Should You Watch: Yes, yes and more yes! Trigger saves anime again!

General Comments: I honestly don’t know how much I can say on this other than, if you haven’t watched this yet, do it right away. That’s a lie though, because I have so much I could talk about on this series, but that would require much more space and time than anyone would like. With that said then, let me just cover the big points. LWA has been stealing hearts since the OVAs and Movie (which I’ve yet to see), so I’m late to the party, but having now seen this tv series, I can understand why. LWA seems simple at the start, but it’s actually got a rich and engaging story-line that slowly descends into a dark and suspenseful one. This is best seen by the contrast between the first half’s magical and pleasant slice of life theme and the second half’s deep and depressing theme. However Akko is the mass of “Yay” that the series needs to retain it’s lighthearted nature. Akko and her friendship with several of the other witches makes the show a joy and even when things do get dire or grim, it’s her never give in attitude that keeps everyone together.

To be honest, the entire cast makes the show a joy in their own right as they each have a unique and interesting personality and their interactions with Akko are unlike any other so it keeps things fun. Just about every one of these main girls got their chance to shine in at least one episode and with every passing one, their friendship with Akko and each other as a whole only got stronger. The character development for a few characters in particular was something special. I especially loved the humanization of certain characters, which doesn’t allow anyone to be wholly “good” or “bad” and everyone loses their way at one point or another, but it’s most often Akko that pulls them back up, earning her the rightful title of main protagonist. Amanda is my best girl, especially after her exclusive episode. *swoon* A certain baddie int he second half is right there with her though in terms of attractiveness.  That’s all I’ll say on that.

Finally, as with most popular shows, there are ship wars going on and I’m not fueling into them with this post, but what I will say is that there is undeniable evidence for the credibility of certain ships, including statements from the creators themselves and so I don’t think these wars are necessary at this point. I personally have two ships that I’m in love with and yes, they are both yuri ships. However, I respect the alternative ships and ultimately in the end, nothing is officially canon. The main point of it all is this; shipping is a subjective act and so it should not be judged or ridiculed by anyone. If everyone remembered that, there will always be peace in all fandoms with these situations.

Overall, LWA got everything right in my book and Trigger continues to become a favorite studio of mine. I implore everyone to check it out and do so legally through netflix, and buy merchandise if you can, so that we can get more season and spin-offs, which the creators have been very vocal about wanting. It’s up to us to make it happen though. LWA truly is magical and so was an easy pick for my #1 anime of the Spring 2017 season.
